Different quests are available to power up the hero and gather resources. This was something of a later title for the PSP, coming out in 2011 when I and probably everyone else was already all Monster Hunter’d out just from plain old Monster Hunter, making the endless parade of similar games of wildly varying quality that tried their own hand at this popular genre in the five years since Monster Hunter Portable‘s first handheld release something that had largely passed me by.įast-forward to the present day and… I’m still all Monster Hunter’d out really, the series doing what it does well enough that when I do feel the itch for a little wyvern-battering action I have no urge to seriously look elsewhere: but when you find a game looks interesting and costs less than a cup of coffee… well, why not? Weapons and armors are crafted with the various materials gathered from the different enemies and bosses. Like in other hunting games, the various weapons allow a variety of combo attacks, but magic can be cast in the middle of a combo. Mercenaries, one of which can be set to resurrect the hero when needed, can now be hired to aid the hero in his quest. The visual style is also less realistic, some cut-scenes are even cell-shaded. They are rather an opportunity to collect rarer materials by destroying some monster parts. The Quick Time events from the previous game are still there, but they are not necessary to defeat the bosses. There are however several differences: new elements are available, there are more customization options for the hero creation, the enemies can be fought head-on, without having to touch them to engage in battle, and dropped items don’t need to picked-up manually simply moving close to them sends the items in the inventory. The game also plays a lot like Lord of Arcana.
